Strangers

I have been known to (on occasion) walk around and ask strangers for their photograph.  I need to do this more often.

Elkmont

Yesterday, Amber and I walked through the abandoned community of Elkmont, located in the Smoky Mountains.  Elkmont was a retreat for the wealthy that began to establish itself in the 1920′s.  We both enjoy visiting sites like this because at times your senses are overwhelmed with the palpable ambiance of old memories.   These were not the homes of the poor mind you, this was a community for the rich… a “weekend getaway” meant for the use of wining and dining, both in their cottages and at the (now demolished) Wonderland Hotel.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonderland_Hotel   It’s unfortunate that as the impoverished families and farmers located within the newly acquired park were being removed, the rich were allowed to stay.  As you peek inside the windows you can almost hear the music that once filled the rooms.

For more information on Elkmont, and the conflict surrounding it… go here. http://home.earthlink.net/~tnhiker/lifeafter50onemansperspective/id43.html
